When Jay Brannan took the stage at Larimer Lounge in Denver back in September he was alone, with only his guitar. By the end of the evening, this was no longer true: the rapt crowd had been drawn into the warm, possessive embrace of his songs. If anyone left not at least a little bit in love with him, they weren’t paying attention.

Self-effacing, sometimes prickly, always ferociously intimate, the songs on Jay’s  unmastered EP (2007), and goddamned, his 2010 full-length album, compel the listener to look deep into his eyes and confront him in his altogether. His music strips him barer than he was in his role as ingenue Ceth in John Cameron Mitchell’s Shortbus (2006).

Jay tours relentlessly, and manages all of his own email, so we were thrilled that he took the time to answer 12 Questions:

1. What is your hometown?

define “home”.  i was born in Houston, Texas…but New York City is where i live.  if “home is where the heart is”, then i don’t know and i’ll get back to you when i meet him.

2. With what fictional character do you most identify?

Cruella De Vil?

3. In the movie of your life, cast an actor to play you.

um, Ellen Page.  or Cheri Oteri, if the movie is meant to be a mockery of my life.

4. What work of art speaks to your soul?

the perfect bowl of Ramen.

5. What books are you currently reading or recommending?

probably something trashy for teenagers that’s about vampires or magic people, and is a 10th generation rip-off of Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, or Twilight.

6. What song or album is currently in heavy rotation on your iPod?

Sinéad O’Connor – The Lion and the Cobra !!!!

7. What’s the last movie that made you cry?

The Kids Are All Right

8.  Cat person or dog person?

CATS!!!  the only thing i hate more than dogs is their owners.

9. What is more important, truth or kindness?

i hate this question.

10.    How do you define sin?

something some asshole made up long ago as part of a conspiracy to control the human race.  and for the most part something only psycho people still subscribe to.

11.    How do you define virtue?

you’re giving me a headache.

12.   Design your headstone: What does it say? What does it look like?

i don’t want a grave.  i want to fade away, unremembered, to oblivion.

Agree 100% about sin. It’s a man made concept to control people.
