Rachel Romero

February 28, 2011

Rachel Romero has her finger on the pulse of Denver. She knows the landscape of the city like the back of her hand and she is astoundingly connected to a diverse and creative community of artists and musicians. Her roots run deep with the hip hop, soul, jazz, funk, and punk rock scenes and she has a taste for flashy sneakers. Rachel’s website, Popular Lemonade, features mixtapes, reviews, interviews, hip hop, and fashion. And when she isn’t doing that, she juggles a rigorous work schedule, doing the school thing, and carving out a niche for herself as an all around bad ass.

She’s an integral member of the Big Top Denver planning committee and 12 Questions is thrilled to feature her to celebrate their upcoming event to benefit SafeHouse Denver.

1. What is your hometown?

Denver.  This means I like burritos, tequila, and stock shows.

2. With what fictional character do you most identify?

Oh, most definitely, Evil Lyn — and Teela too.  You remember Masters of the Universe?  Evil Lyn was the super awesome villainess with the crystal ball wand that used to put Skeletor into place (and, for the record, was way cooler and more powerful thanSkeletor anyway).  That’s ALL Evil Lyn.

And, do you remember Teela?  She was like, the good guy version of Evil Lyn who was captured by Skeletor for her goodness and goddess-ness.   I’m both Evil Lyn and Teela, balanced somehow by all of the crazy shit that I do.  It’s all about balance.

3. In the movie of your life, cast an actor to play you.

I mean, I’m going to say Rosario Dawson.  She won mydoopleganger contest and… She’s hot.  Someone would have to fake tattoo the shit outta her though.  And electrocute her so that she looks accurate for the bed head scenes (you know there will be some of those).

4. What work of art speaks to your soul?

Dilla’s entire discography.  Jay-Z, Reasonable Doubt.

The entire Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji by Katsushika Hokusai.

Geeky digital art by Cory Arcangel.

5. What books are you currently reading or recommending?

I’m currently reading Women Who Kill, which is a nonfiction summary of women serial killers – super awesome.  It’s THE one book that sits on my bookshelf that people always ask about.  I’m also reading SuperFreakonomics, which breaks down the economy of prostitution in the first chapter.  Did you know that the entire prostitution industry has lowered rates in the past forty years because common women have gotten easier?  It’s all supply & demand, baby.

6. What song or album is currently in heavy rotation on your iPod?

Chico Man – Analog Drift (Thanks to FireLily for the suggestion)

Anything Rick Ross.  Because he’s a BAAAAAAAAWSE.

7. What’s the last movie that made you cry?

Zombie Strippers.  Yes, it was THAT sad.  Who likes to see that much plastic surgery work melt off of a zombie?

8. Cat person or dog person?

I have an amazingly old and fabulous Brussels Griffon named Bea Arthur — Golden Girls status.  I rescued her from a fabulous organization out of Colorado Springs called the National Mill Dog Rescue.  I was so impressed with the rescue that I immediately began volunteering for them as their social media consultant.  I hate cats.

9. What is more important, truth or kindness?

I’m a huge believer in kind truth.  It’s like, if your friend asks you if her ass looks fat, you reply, “Well, yes.  But men like fat asses.”

10. How do you define sin?

When Jesus is mad at you, it’s a sin.

11. How do you define virtue?

When Jesus is happy with you, you’re probably doing something virtuous.

12. Design your headstone: What does it say? What does it look like?

Here lies Rachel, one bad ass bitch — and it will be covered in synthetic snakeskin and diamonds.

Bonus Question: Who would you like to see answer these questions?
