Vania Stoyanova

Vania Stoyanova

It’s exciting, in an age when the book is continuously eulogized, to find an artist like Vania Stoyanova who uses new media technology to bring books to the attention of new readers of all ages. Vania is an Atlanta based photographer and videographer who devotes her art and passion to promoting reading through book trailers for some of the best books in Young Adult.  With trailers to her credit for novels by YA urban fantasy rock-stars like Cassandra Clare and Holly Black, among many others, Vania gives readers a taste of the authors’ worlds, teasing readers with glimpses of their favorite characters and hints of the action.

Vania’s pleasure in casting pretty boys who look good in runes, as well as her delight in the books themselves, are obvious. She’s got her finger on the pulse of what’s hot in YA fiction, and you should probably print off her response to ?5 and use it as a shopping list at your nearest independent bookstore (after you finish reading her interview, of course).

Vania’ has an eye for the romantic, and this sense of romance comes through vividly in her photography, from quirky author pics to lush portraits. She is a cheerfully accessible artist who spends countless hours connecting with readers and fans through the power of Twitter, and 12 Questions is pleased to present this little teaser of her world.

1. What is your hometown?

I was born in a small city called Kazanlak in the nearly central part of Bulgaria. I moved here in 1996 when I was 8 years old and while I miss home, I love this great land of opportunity! At least it lets me be the artist I’ve always wanted to be.

2. With what fictional character do you most identify?

I loved Pipi Longstocking. Why? She was colorful and rebellious and sought adventure. What girl wouldn’t identify with her?

3. In the movie of your life, cast an actor to play you.

That is really hard! I’ll say Abigail Breslin! Don’t ask why.

4. What work of art speaks to your soul?

I love watercolor paintings. No not the kind with landscapes. I mean the beautiful surreal paintings of the likes of Liza Corbett and Kelly McKernan.

5. What books are you currently reading or recommending?

I mostly read young adult because it’s the field I work in.
A few books I recommend are…
for those fans of organized crime: WHITE CAT (and sequel RED GLOVE) by Holly Black.
for those fans of some good southern comfort mixed in with their paranormal: BEAUTIFUL CREATURES by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl
for fans of historical and why not again throw some fantasy into the mix: A GREAT AND TERRIBLE BEAUTY by Libba Bray
for fans of the cute and adorable and totally swoony: ANNA AND THE FRENCH KISS by Stephanie Perkins|
for those who favor tear jerkers: IF I STAY (and sequel WHERE SHE WENT) by Gayle Forman
for those who like some angst with a dash of pain: WINTERGIRLS by Laurie Halse Anderson
And I probably should stop there.

6. What song or album is currently in heavy rotation on your iPod?

Adele’s “21” which is perfectly written! And a Cali artist I’m totally digging, Lissie.

7. What’s the last movie that made you cry?

I rarely watch movies anymore but totally cried watching The Lion King.

8. Cat person or dog person?

Cat. They take care of themselves. And you don’t have to walk them. They own you.

9. What is more important, truth or kindness?

Truth clothed in kindness.

10. How do you define sin?

Being malicious. Being self-centered. Being self-righteous. Being selfish.

11. How do you define virtue?

Being thoughtful and kind.

12. Design your headstone: What does it say? What does it look like?

It will be a picture frame. Empty. Glass only and it will say “Vania, who captured life in her hands.”

Bonus Question: Who would you like to see answer these questions?

Amy Plum, author of DIE FOR ME.
