Lesley Arfin

Recounting the mishaps of our adolescent and teen years can often be ceaselessly cringe-worthy. Lesley Arfin, however, grabbed her old diaries and revisited every awkward moment with her book Dear Diary. Arfin tackled the drama of crushes, the battle of best friend to enemy, and boyfriends. Along with these inevitable issues, she confronts the compounded struggle of drug addiction.

But since Dear Diary‘s 2007 release, Arfin has fully embraced her role as a writer. She’s written for Jezebel.com, Jane, Nylon, Paper, Street Carnage, BuzzNet, and Thought Catalog.  She’s the former Editor-In-Chief of Missbehave magazine and done commercial work for XBox, Burton, Sophmore, and Nike.

Lesley’s voice and sense of humor lend to her relatability.  She’s funny and self aware. And it’s those attributes that will furnish her with fodder for her current work as a staff writer on the upcoming HBO series Girls, created by Lena Dunham (Tiny Furniture) and produced by Judd Apatow.

1. What is your hometown?

Syosset, Long Island, New York.

2. With what fictional character do you most identify?

A combination of Weetzie Bat and Lindsay Weir.

3. In the movie of your life, cast an actor to play you.

Mae Whitman

4. What work of art speaks to your soul?

I don’t know. Weird question. It’s personal and hard to say something without sounding like a d bag. I recently just saw that documentary Radiant Child by Tamra Davis about Basquiat, and I was moved. So I guess my answer is that? Both the movie and the artwork by Basquiat.

5. What books are you currently reading or recommending?

I’m currently reading “Bossypants” by Tina Fey and I highly recommend it.

6. What song or album is currently in heavy rotation on your iPod?

“Gone” by the Sundays, “Firework” by Katy Perry. Albums: Girls, the Soft Pack, Ariel Pink, Steely Dan “Can’t Buy A Thrill,” Guns n Roses “Appetite”, Kate Bush “Hounds of Love”, Abe Vigoda, Cold Showers, Mike Bones, Hidden Fees, Gang Gang Dance… there’s a lot.

7. What’s the last movie that made you cry?

Don’t remember what movie. I cried last night during Parenthood. It was a highly emotional episode.

8.  Cat person or dog person?

I don’t care. I like both. I’m a both person.

9. What is more important, truth or kindness?

Truth first, then kindness. Both important.

10.    How do you define sin?

Whatever the bible says. They did a good job.

11.    How do you define virtue?

Same with whatever the bible says in opposition to sin.

12.   Design your headstone: What does it say? What does it look like?

It says “Here lies Lesley Arfin: ‘I Didn’t Care For That.'” Just kidding. I like life. Don’t want a tombstone. Will be cremated and displayed in someone’s living room thank you.

Bonus Question: Who would you like to see answer these questions?

Every single person on the face of the Earth plus other planets in the future when the aliens let themselves be known/take over.
