Mike Whitney

Mike Whitney

Choosing the lifestyle of a writer and musician has always been a silly-hearted endeavor. But, for some, it’s not really a choice. The passion of an artist can demand that one travel in some funny directions, but it’s always an adventure. Mike Whitney is living that life. Mike might tell you that his wife prefers he “make a living” rather than let his whimsy lead him, but a creative mind can’t be deterred from it’s purpose.

Mike’s been playing music for 40 some years and been writing for 60. Both his writing and his music are playful – and showcase his splendid sense of humor. Honestly, Mike’s downright silly, but these days that’s refreshing.

Mike’s been wrapping up his latest CD, Best of Intentions, due out in July 2011, but when he’s not doing that he’s posting to his blog and doing what he does best – create.

Mike was nominated for 12 Questions by reader Butch Freeman. Thanks to Butch for the recommendation, and to Mike for taking time to respond.

1. What is your hometown?

Hayesville, NC. Born in Chicago and immediately began moving south.

2. With what fictional character do you most identify?

Jubal Harshaw of “Stranger in a Strange Land.”

3. In the movie of your life, cast an actor to play you.

Paul Rudd

4. What work of art speaks to your soul?

Pygmalion

Pygmalion

5. What books are you currently reading or recommending?

The Louise Penny catalog of Inspector Gamache novels.

6. What song or album is currently in heavy rotation on your iPod?

Currently recording original songs for a new album, “Best of Intentions”.
Several demos of songs for inclusion on a 12″ vinyl release planned for Christmas can be heard here.

7. What’s the last movie that made you cry?

A recent revisit to Deliverance produced this surprising and teary scene that didn’t move me in the ’70’s, testimony to age-induced nostalgia or melancholy:

8.  Cat person or dog person?

Was a cat person for 17 years, now not so much. Wife still is. Later…

9. What is more important, truth or kindness?

Kindness, especially to loved ones, can usurp truth, which is not to say you should lie as a habit. Only, as Roseanne Barr used to say, “Women lie to men all the time. It’s easier than explaining the truth to them. Oh yes, you are the king, oh yes, (doing her nails) oh stop, you’re killing me.”

10.  How do you define sin?

Sin is what Johnny Mercer is ag’in’. Intentionally hurting another.

11. How do you define virtue?

Helping others with no thought of payback.

12.   Design your headstone: What does it say? What does it look like?

I’ve tried and tried. Ain’t that a hoot?
There’s a mouse in here but I can’t reboot.
