Introduction by Chris Besinger

Truth is stranger than poetry:

There is Retro and there’s retro.  As in reverse or like retrograde (when Mercury is in retrograde its really problematic), but when like people talk about retro music they don’t mean Vampire Hands cuz even though the tunes have an eye on the past (Can, Eno, Neu and uh y’know other stuff with more letters) its always a good idea to watch something you are trying to evade.  Plus the bass is cranked and as Chris Bierden‘s vocals skip across the lower edge of the cloud cover the Roses (Chris and Alex) work that pocket real sweet.

It’s like funky but stiff?  And like laid back but not mellow?

But so it is some good stuff and it is one beast on the record and another live and man I can really get behind that. Wee-heavy and a bottle of bread!

(Chris Bierden, who does double-duty on bass and vocals, responded to 12 Questions on behalf of the band.)

1. What is your hometown?

Minneapolis, MN

2. With what fictional character do you most identify?

Ghost Dad

3. In the movie of your life, cast an actor to play you.

Hugh Grant, silly!

4. What work of art speaks to your soul?

“Albatross” by Fleetwood Mac

5. What books are you currently reading or recommending?

“A Man Without a Country”

6. What song or album is currently in heavy rotation on your iPod?

No ipod, but Dorris Duke’s “I’m a loser” is the best cd in my car.

7. What’s the last movie that made you cry?

I can’t remember, but my girlfriend recently cried during two separate episodes of Cheers.

8.  Cat person or dog person?

Only evil people would choose between kitties and puppies! Dog person.

9. What is more important, truth or kindness?

Truthiness

10. How do you define sin?

That thing that you want to do all the time but your dad says that if you do it too much you could go blind.

11. How do you define virtue?

A virtue is a trait or quality subjectively deemed to be morally excellent and thus is valued as a foundation of principle and good moral being. Personal virtues are characteristics valued as promoting individual and collective well being.

12. Design your headstone: What does it say? What does it look like?

It’s the giant black monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey and you have to climb a 30 foot ladder to read the tiny inscription at the top that says “There’s only one rule that I know of, babies–God damn it you’ve got to be kind.”

Bonus Question: Who would you like to see answer these questions?

Ray Liotta
