Tiny Danza

October 24, 2011

Tiny Danza

Combining live drums, synth keys and electric guitar with soulful vocals and tight rapping, Toronto five-piece Tiny Danza has a signature sound that is a perfect blend of hip-hop, R&B, and party rock. Not satisfied with the state of contemporary pop and hip-hop these days, they’re committed to writing music that is at once sophisticated, accessible and meaningful; it’s where art music meets hip-hop.

Tiny Danza are  Andrew Craig (vox), Galen Hogg (vox), Matt Russo (guitar), Andrew Santaguida (keys), and Nick Shao (drums). The band members have all known each other since the mid 90s when they all attended Etobicoke School of the Arts together. Matt, Andrew, and Nick have been playing together in various groups for over a decade, while Andrew and Galen were both part of the hip-hop group Half Life while living in Montreal.

Tiny Danza are poised to be the next big thing out of Toronto. If you want to catch them live (which, come one, you totally do) Tiny Danza are playing October 26th with Andy Milonakis at 99 Sudbury for Harthfest, and will be playing Digifest Toronto 2011 on October 30th at Dundas Square.

Galen Hogg and Andrew Santaguida responded on behalf of the band.

1. What is your hometown?

Toronto

2. With what fictional character do you most identify?

God

3. In the movie of your life, cast an actor to play you.

Jessica Alba and Olivia Wilde. They would each portray one half of me. I don’t know what the concept would be, but there will be lots sex.

4. What work of art speaks to your soul?

If you get high enough, all art speaks to you… it’s terrifying.

5. What books are you currently reading or recommending?

The Complete Idiots Guide To Songwriting, 2nd edition by Joel Hirschhorn

6. What song or album is currently in heavy rotation on your iPod?

“You Could Have It All” by Tiny Danza. It’s layered, so you could listen to it multiple times and always be surprised. After a couple of listens, you can skip most of the tracks.

7. What’s the last movie that made you cry?

“Big Tits Zombie”, it’s a real movie and there is a surprisingly heart-wrenching subplot.

8. Cat person or dog person?

Dog

9. What is more important, truth or kindness?

Truth. Nobody ever got anywhere being kind. Or maybe they did, what do we know?

10. How do you define sin?

Loving thy neighbour… when your neighbour has a husband.

11. How do you define virtue?

The opposite of these answers.

12. Design your headstone: What does it say? What does it look like?

We will have amassed such a fortune by the time that we die, that instead of being buried, I will instead arrange for a re-enactment of Weekend At Bernies, starring my corpse. After it is over, the whole production will start over again, with an all new cast. This will go on until science has cured death, or there is some sort of Zombie uprising.
