Artist McLean Fahnestock is a product of the Washington D.C. suburbs. Politics are in the air in that neck of the woods, but McLean was not satisfied with only learning about the government.  As a child, she turned to her chemistry set, circuit board, and Legos for further investigation. Now she works in video, sculptural installation, and alternative photographic processes. McLean received a BFA from Middle Tennessee State University and MFA from California State University Long Beach. Her work has been exhibited in New York, California, Tennessee, Indiana, Ireland, Japan, Germany, Belgium, and Canada. She lives and works in Long Beach, California.

1. What is your hometown?

Why is this such a hard question? I have moved a lot so I credit three places: Washington D.C. suburbs, Nashville, TN, and Long Beach, CA.

2. With what fictional character do you most identify?

Buffy Summers.

3. In the movie of your life, cast an actor to play you.

Jodie Foster or Sarah Michelle Gellar

4. What work of art speaks to your soul?

I love the Richard Serras at LACMA.

5. What books are you currently reading or recommending?

I just finished “Zen and the Art of Archery” and the first compilation book from the new Morning Glories comic series but when asked to recommend something it is always 33 1/3’s book “Celine Dion’s ‘Let’s talk About Love: A Journey to the End of Taste'”. It is an amazing break down of aesthetics and pop culture.

6. What song or album is currently in heavy rotation on your iPod?

Girl Talk – “All Day”

7. What’s the last movie that made you cry?

I avoid crying movies. I haven’t seen a Disney movie since “Aladdin” for this very reason. TV shows sneak up on me though. “Glee” did it once last season.

8. Cat person or dog person?

9. What is more important, truth or kindness?

10. How do you define sin?

Something that eats a bit of your humanity. Soul corrosives.

11. How do you define virtue?

The opposite. Something that adds to your humanity, a growth agent.

12. Design your headstone: What does it say? What does it look like?

Those video headstones are creepy enough to be fun but I would want to take it further, like a life sized hologram that pops up out of the ground when someone walks by. The nerd in me whats to add a Star Wars reference right here but this will be in print and I have a reputation to uphold.

Bonus Question: Who would you like to see answer these questions?

Girl Talk
