Matt Helgeson

As a cultural phenomenon, video games are systematically under appreciated. As a senior editor at Game InformerMatt Helgeson works to change that, one review at a time. Matt has been covering interactive entertainment since 1999, starting fresh from U of M as an unpaid intern. Matt has been covering interactive entertainment since 1999, when he joined Game Informer as an unpaid intern.

Matt has A lifelong interest in games, culture, music, and writing, and has traveled the world covering all aspects of video games and game culture. When not writing about games, Matt plays bass and reads a lot of books. He also co-hosts the talk radio show Video Games Weekly on KFAN AM in Minneapolis.

Matt has a wife and daughther and lives in Minneapolis.

Blue Earth, Minnesota

2. With what fictional character do you most identify?

Hal Incandenza from David Foster Wallace’s “Infinite Jest”

3. In the movie of your life, cast an actor to play you.

I can’t really think of a bald actor that fits, so I’ll go with Ryan Gosling in a bald wig.

4. What work of art speaks to your soul?

“Tonight’s the Night” by Neil Young

5. What books are you currently reading or recommending?

Currently reading “A Dance With Dragons” by George R. R. Martin

6. What song or album is currently in heavy rotation on your iPod?

Hatchback – “Zeus and Apollo”

7. What’s the last movie that made you cry?

I don’t often cry at movies. I’d guess Pixar’s “Up”; the first 15 minutes of that were amazing.

8. Cat person or dog person?

Dog person, hands down.

9. What is more important, truth or kindness?


10. How do you define sin?

Meanness of spirit.

11. How do you define virtue?

Trying your best to do the right thing.

12. Design your headstone: What does it say? What does it look like?

A simple stone with my birth year and death year will be just fine.
