Derek Bishop

February 22, 2012

There’s a distinct and deliberate sense of nostalgia in Derek Bishop‘s music. On his debut full-length CD, Resistance is Beautiful, the New York singer-songwriter shows himself to be a connoisseur of pop music – seamlessly melding the seemingly unmeldable by juxtaposing vintage keyboards with big band glosses, Weimar cabaret with 80s synth pop, all overlaid with hints of both Broadway and Laurel Canyon.

This ambitious synthesis of styles combined with occasionally bleak lyrics led Higher Plain Music to describe Derek as “quite possibly our favourite new male artist of 2011.” Give him a listen, and he may become one of your favorites for 2012.

On Saturday night, Derek will perform in UNHINGED: A Night of Queer Singer/Songwriters at the Triad Theater in New York City. The event features NYC’s best underground queer songwriters, together for a night of music and madness. We think it’ll be one hell of a show.

1. What is your hometown?

2. With what fictional character do you most identify?

Jessica Stein. From “Kissing Jessica Stein”.

Please fast forward to 1:12 to see this hilarious and lovely rant that sums up about 99% of me.

3. In the movie of your life, cast an actor to play you.

I hear good things about this fella. Plus he looks good in a cap.

4. What work of art speaks to your soul?

Ever since I was 9…

5. What books are you currently reading or recommending?

6. What song or album is currently in heavy rotation on your iPod?

Love this entire CD. Makes me really want an owl for my next video.

7. What’s the last movie that made you cry?

This one. The clip wont do the movie justice… But it’s a good clip:

8. Cat person or dog person?

I prefer accordions..but will probably end up getting a dog if my boyfriend has anything to say about it…and the dog will probably eat my accordion.

9. What is more important, truth or kindness?

I’d like to think that I would always prefer the truth. But it seems in most instances, this is what people really want:

10. How do you define sin?

That horrible auto-tune movement that has pervaded nearly all of popular music and mass culture. Everyone sounds the same, and no one sounds real. Vocals are over-processed and sound like a bunch of robots buzzing and bleeping. It’s everywhere — and some kids are growing up thinking this is how singing sounds. (They even use the effect on GLEE.) To me, this is sin, because we are taking something as wonderful and unique as the human voice and reducing it to a video game noise effect.

11. How do you define virtue?

Being kind to people — for no reason other than just being kind. Being selfless, sweet and giving. Especially when doing so means you must go against the grain and speak up when a majority deems it unnecessary or wrong.

12. Design your headstone: What does it say? What does it look like?

Bonus Question: Who would you like to see answer these questions?

Every candidate who is aiming to run for President this year.
