The Bugs

August 16, 2012

The Bugs are a lot of fun! A two piece that gets the room dancing, they’ve been a long time favorite at Total Fest.
One of Portland’s best kept secrets, Mike and Paul make music for stomping and clapping – what garage punk is meant to sound like.

We asked them to help us out with a bio and this is what they sent us: “The Bugs are 2 people from Portland, Oregon, USA. We have been a band since 1998. We have LPs & 45s out on the Tombstone, Labil & Hovercraft record labels”.

Pretty darn perfect!

Catch The Bugs on Thursday, August 16th, at the Top Hat at Total Fest XI. Fuckin’ A Right.

1. What is your hometown?

Mike

San Diego

Paul

Pittsburgh, but the Bugs are from Portland

2. With what fictional character do you most identify?

Mike

Snoopy

Paul

Both Ren AND Stimpy.

3. In the movie of your life, cast an actor to play you.

Mike

Marty Feldman

Paul

Same answer as #2.

4. What work of art speaks to your soul?

Mike

Wheat Field with Crows, Vincent van Gogh

Paul

“Spiritual” by the John Coltrane Quartet with Eric Dolphy.

5. What books are you currently reading or recommending?

Mike

Thomas Pynchon’s Gravity’s Rainbow *

Paul

Dammit, that’s my answer, too! I’ve been hacking away at that book for a year and a half. I’m less than 100 pages from the end, but I’ve totally lost interest. I’m not sure I can recommend it really. As far as unwieldy books go, David Foster Wallace’s “Infinite Jest” was a million times more entertaining to me, but I can’t remember a thing about it anymore.

6. What song or album is currently in heavy rotation on your iPod?

Mike

Don’t have an iPoo’d. Fred Lane’s From the One That Cut You *

Paul

I also don’t have an iPod.

7. What’s the last movie that made you cry?

Mike

Ivanovo Detstvo by Andrei Tarkovsky

Paul

I’m not sure, either the Dead Moon documentary or “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”. I cry at really inappropriate times in movies.

8.  Cat person or dog person?

Paul

I am neither a dog person nor a cat person,  but there are some individual cats & dogs I like very much.

Mike

Dog

9. What is more important, truth or kindness?

Mike

Truth

Paul

He’s lying.

10.    How do you define sin?

Mike

Feeling bad about a good thing

Paul

Las Vegas. Not because of the gambling, but because of the sprawl. Phoenix is just as bad.

11.    How do you define virtue?

Mike

Maxima omnium virtutum est patientia

Paul

Dude, is that the first Blue Cheer album? I love that record. Killer guitar tones.

12.   Design your headstone: What does it say? What does it look like?

Mike

It’s an orb and it spins reading over and over:
“One smart fellow; he felt smart.  Two smart fellows; they felt smart.  Three smart fellows; they all felt smart”

Paul

“Oops…”

Bonus Question: Who would you like to see answer these questions?

Mike

Rebecca Hensley and Spencer Keralis

*i’ve been listening to this record continuously and trying to finish this book for about 21 years
