Cactus Peach

Cactus Peach

Texas “Psyche Punk” outfit Cactus Peach is one of the many things that keeps Austin weird. Known for their wild songwriting, unconventional band setup, and “old school” psychedelic oil projections at their shows, Cactus Peach are a “switch band” – all four members rotate throughout performances to the different instruments in which they’re proficient.

The band has fluctuated in number over the years (adding and subtracting folks) and due to this, prefers to think of itself more like a “family” of inactive and active members. The original members met while attending UT Austin through booze-addled parties, malarkey and whatnot.Cactus Peach currently consists of the original lineup of Zane, Bain, Garret, and Frels, minus Micah. Other Inactive members include Ryan Neal and Dylan Neal, who are on a long and seemingly permanent stead in Hollywood. Their music has been described as “Celine Dion on Psychedelics.”

Listen for yourself, and read on to learn more about these Austin oddballs.

1. What is your hometown?

Cactus Peach was formed in Austin, Texas in the summer of ’08 inside an old barn… but all of the members were born in different cities around Texas. Zane, Bain and Dylan were born in San Antonio, Frels was born in El Campo and Garrett was born in Houston. Frels is a real country boy indeed.

2. With what fictional character do you most identify?

All and any characters created by Hayao Miyazaki. His characters are super vibrant and creative. All of our band loves his films and the stories he tells.

3. In the movie of your life, cast an actor to play you.

Definitely Harrison Ford to play the roles of all five members of Cactus Peach. Well, actually, Zane would probably be Chewbacca, but Frels, Garrett, Dyl and Bain would definitely be Harrison Ford. How can you hate on a man who has been both Han Solo and Indiana Jones? Given these facts, he could easily be all of Cactus Peach…

4. What work of art speaks to your soul?

Have you ever seen Dr. Suess’ “secret” acrylic paintings? Those works are friggin’ mind blowing! The dude also did taxidermy of his creatures…Have you ever seen a Sneetches’ head mounted on a wall!? It was a bit scary…I was a little scared.

5. What books are you currently reading or recommending?

We were having “book talk” last night over steak and beer while celebrating with Nik, Garrett’s Bro, for his B-Day. Garrett and I both agreed that The Old Man and the Sea is a fantastic short read. “This book is Cactus Peach approved.”

6. What song or album is currently in heavy rotation on your iPod?

Bain has been Jamming the Strokes’ previous release First Impressions of Earth pretty freakin’ hard, man. It’s a new direction for those dudes, but a great album nonetheless.

7. What’s the last movie that made you cry?

Sometimes, the whole band watches The Notebook together and we have a good cry. That is, of course, only after we watch Some Kind of Monster about Metallica. In which Metallica cries, a lot…

8. Cat person or dog person?

We’re animal people. The Moontower house, which is where Bain and Frels live and where Cactus Peach practices, has cats, dogs, chickens, turtles, fish, hell, even raccoons. We don’t discriminate, they’re all fuzzy and lovable…except for the fish, and the turtle… and the chickens… we don’t play with the raccoons either… yunno, with the rabies and all…

9. What is more important, truth or kindness?

Truth, if we were trying to be nice to each other and not hurt each others’ feelings I know our music wouldn’t be where it is today. You can’t be kind to someone if you don’t like their part they’re playing, or in fewer cases, the lyrics they write. We all pride ourselves in being as honest as possible with each other in order to make the best music we can possibly make. We’re kinda each others’ cross references, which can be frustrating and maybe even hurt someones feelings from time to time, but that’s the sacrifice we make to make the songs the best we can make them. With us, the song always comes first, the music is always first. This ain’t no Sweet Times With Cactus Peach it’s Let’s Make the Best Damn Music We Can Make Time, and Yea, Sorry bro, I Don’t Like that Riff…It Sounds Kinda Weird…Let’s Try Another Angle.

10. How do you define sin?

Sin is not being honest with yourself or others. That and hurting someone else, that shit is wack. See: The Ten Commandments also. See Picture Representation:

11. How do you define virtue?

Bain is a philosophy major, He’s gonna field this one…

Bain’s Answer:

“Assume a virtue if you have it not.

That monster, custom, who all sense doth eat,

Of habits devil, is angel, yet in this,

That to the use of actions fair and good

He likewise gives a frock or livery

That aptly is put on” – Bill Shakespeare from Hamlet

12. Design your headstone: What does it say? What does it look like?

Our Headstone would Read: “Here Lies Cactus Peach, They Rode the Devil through a Tornado and Sang Like Drunken Angels. Check Out Our Free Music On Bandcamp”. It would be a glorious Tomb, made of Diamonds and Gold, no, scratch that, Platinum and Bones.

Bonus Question: Who would you like to see answer these questions?

My Homeboys from Austin, Blurry Vision, no doubt, them or My other Homeboys/Homegirls The Big Bad Wolftones, Them or my Other Homeboy Austin Leonard Jones and Pals, him or my other Homeboys in Sleep Good. Yep. ; )
