Brooke Annibale

Singer-songwriter Brooke Annibale’s upcoming EP, Words in Your Eyes (Feb 5, 2013), showcases a rising talent in the midst of an intriguing transition. The EP features less of the acoustic folk pop sound that has appeared on her previous releases—particularly on her 2011 full-length release, Silence Worth Breaking, which Stereo Subversion called “phenomenal,” and Glide Magazine hailed as “the kind of record that some artists wait their whole lives to make”—and focuses instead on an electric sound mixed with ambient sensibilities and lots of orchestration. Some of the tracks were written during the Silence sessions, and while they did not make the final cut for that record they still help this EP feel even more like a transition from the Silence era to whatever she has in mind next.

Brooke is offering a free download of “Middle of the Mess,” the second track from Words In Your Eyes. Give it a listen and read on to learn more about this evolving artist.

1. What is your hometown?

Born and raised right outside of Pittsburgh, PA.

2. With what fictional character do you most identify?

Probably one of the guys in the band in the movie That Thing You Do. I’ve always loved that movie and related to the dreams of those characters.

3. In the movie of your life, cast an actor to play you.

Natalie Portman would be cool.

4. What work of art speaks to your soul?

It’s hard to think of any work of art that speaks to my soul more than music. And then it’s hard to pick just one piece of music that speaks to my soul more than the others. I suppose I could say a well written song, or possibly a song in a powerful scene in a movie. I’ve always loved the way music can enhance a scene in a show or movie and vice versa.

5. What books are you currently reading or recommending?

I’m always building a reading list and never making it through it all. I just started a few that I haven’t finished yet. I tend to read more non-fiction, or something I can learn from, most recently that was The Writing Life by Annie Dillard.

6. What song or album is currently in heavy rotation on your iPod?

Kathleen Edwards’ Voyageur album has been for months.

7. What’s the last movie that made you cry?

Les Miserables… several times!

8. Cat person or dog person?

Growing up I always wanted a dog. I only had a rabbit as a kid. My family got a cat when I was about 18. Now I have a cat of my own as well whom I love. I still want a dog some day. I love both really!

9. What is more important, truth or kindness?

You can’t ever totally control truth but you can control your own kindness.

10. How do you define sin?

An act with evil intent that harms yourself or another.

11. How do you define virtue?

Doing what is right and just, with humbleness rather than pride.

12. Design your headstone: What does it say? What does it look like?

Wow, never thought anything about that till you asked honestly, and don’t have a clue.

Bonus Question: Who would you like to see answer these questions?

Glen Hansard
