The Delta Saints

Delta Saints

Today on 12 Questions we’re celebrating a new release from Nashville-based Blues-rock group The Delta Saints.  Their debut full length, Death Letter Jubilee, dropped on January 15th, and we can’t stop listening to it. Having met at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee, The Delta Saints quickly fell in stride with one another and began hammering out raucous harmonica driven rock supported by lead singer Ben Ringel’s howling vocals. Since the band’s inception they have released two EP’s and toured relentlessly. The group has also gained considerable notoriety both at home in Nashville and abroad throughout Europe.

With Death Letter Jubilee, The Delta Saints are blooming into life not as a pretty flower might, but perhaps a mushroom explosion from an atomic bomb or a feral thunderhead. After two self-released and well received EPs, Pray On and A Bird Called Angola, fans demanded a full length and happily burst through the band’s Kickstarter goal to get it. That kind of fan response is thrilling, but it also sets high expectations. We think the band rose to the occasion.

The questions were answered by lead singer Ben Ringel. Cue up their new YouTube video of the title track, and give a listen while you read. Warning: there will be toe tapping, and maybe dancing. It’s totally worth the risk.

1. What is your hometown?

Pineville, Louisiana

2. With what fictional character do you most identify?

Kevin Arnold – The Wonder Years.

3. In the movie of your life, cast an actor to play you.

Every man alive is going to say Johnny Depp a la Pirates of the Caribbean 1-3. Wouldn’t that be nice? Realistically (hah!), I wouldn’t be sad if it were Bill Murray during the Caddyshack years.

4. What work of art speaks to your soul?

I saw my first Van Gogh painting last year. It wasn’t one of the iconic ones, but more of a B-side. It was an incredible thing, seeing something like that. The painting was of sailboats and the sea.

5. What books are you currently reading or recommending?

The first edition of Mark Twain’s biography.

6. What song or album is currently in heavy rotation on your iPod?

Dr. John-Locked Down.

7. What’s the last movie that made you cry?

Flubber. Robin Williams was simply brilliant.

8. Cat person or dog person?

Dog. Big ones.

9. What is more important, truth or kindness?

Kindness. Not because I think it’s ok to lie, but because I think kindness is a sort of truth. Or maybe truth is a type of kindness. I don’t know.. I think the world needs more of both.

10. How do you define sin?

Doing something that you know to be wrong, whether legally or morally.

11. How do you define virtue?

Doing something that you know to be right, even when it is unpleasant.

12. Design your headstone: What does it say? What does it look like?

I simply want it to read my name. But hidden behind the tombstone, there will be speakers that play Kenny Loggins’ “I’m Alright” every time someone approaches to pay their respects.

Bonus Question: Who would you like to see answer these questions?

Bill Murray
