Francesca Lia Block

January 23, 2013

For many young women I know, dreaming about being Weetzie Bat informed them to bleach their hair and emulate her spirit. And everyday another girl is transformed by their own reading of the books of Francesca Lia Block.

Block, author of 25 novels and a Los Angeles native, crafts magical, postmodern characters and stories maneuvering through the city she loves. She writes about the city by way of her characters and their interpretations of the landscape. And all the while, these fairy tales manage to convey a message of love.
She has received numerous honors, including the Margaret A. Edwards Lifetime Achievement Award and the Phoenix Award, as well as citations from the American Library Association, The New York Times Book Review and the School Library Journal, Her work has been published around the world, translated into many languages.
