Birds of Chicago

Birds of Chicago

When two major figures in North American folk music come together to collaborate, the results are bound to be thrilling.  In October of 2012, Allison Russell and JT Nero released  Birds of Chicago, the first installment in what we hope is a long line of releases. This duo has been creating fantastic Folk/Americana music for many years. Allison Russell hails from Montreal and has found success with her Vancouver-based band Po’ Girl; JT Nero is based in Chicago where he performs with his band JT & The Clouds. The duo previously collaborated under the moniker JT Nero and released Mountains/Forests in 2010. After touring across the US with San Francisco-based Americana/Folk singer-songwriter Sean Hayes, Birds of Chicago is currently opening select dates for Elephant Revival and preparing for a UK tour in the spring! Catch them February 14th at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago!

These questions have been answered by the male half of the Birds of Chicago, JT Nero – and do not necessarily reflect the tastes, moral philosophies of his partner, Allison Russell….

1. What is your hometown?

I am originally from Toledo, Ohio – but all my family is from Chicago and I have been there about 11 years now. Allison is originally from Montreal, Quebec.

2. With what fictional character do you most identify?

Huck Finn

3. In the movie of your life, cast an actor to play you.

I want Morgan Freeman to play me — even the early childhood stages of my life — and Alli, of course, will be played by Helen Mirren

4. What work of art speaks to your soul?

Max Ernst – “Two Children are Threatened by a Nightingale” and I don’t always go in for surrealist stuff – but that one affected me deeply and still does, in kind of a sudden shadow, sudden shudder way….

5. What books are you currently reading or recommending?

the Tso of Wu– autobiography by the RZA founder of the Wu Tang Clan. Absurd. Sublime…

6. What song or album is currently in heavy rotation on your iPod?

Anais Mitchell’s “Young Man in America” it’s ridiculous more folks don’t know about that lady – powerful stuff.

7. What’s the last movie that made you cry?

Wildcats – LL Cool J, Woody Harrelson… Football movies always make me cry.

8. Cat person or dog person?

Love dogs, and cats that tend to act like dogs.

9. What is more important, truth or kindness?

Kindness, for gods sake!

10. How do you define sin?

Acting harmfully, knowingly.

11. How do you define virtue?

Loving others – owning up to any and all shitty behavior, trying not to repeat it.

12. Design your headstone: What does it say? What does it look like?

Obviously, it’s carved in the same symbol that Prince used instead of his name during his no-name period; out of marble. I would prefer a non sequiter engraving — something to the effect of “he danced with the shadows, and also the froot loops”

Not in english. Maybe ancient Sumerian.

Bonus Question: Who would you like to see answer these questions?

Manny Pacquaio – the great Phillipino boxer/statesman
