Charles Phoenix

February 28, 2013

No one appreciates Americana more than Charles Phoenix. As a performer, humorist, chef, and author, Phoenix has become the Ambassador of Americana sharing vintage imagery and culinary creations and an enthusiasm for the kitschy and classic.

Phoenix offers, often sold out, school bus tours of attractions living in the city and suburbia stopping at landmarks that represent the best of what our country has to offer. Attending one of Phoenix’s pop culture slideshows have all the charm of your aunt’s trip to Boca, but are way less boring! He also runs The Charles Phoenix Test Kitchen which creates recipes with classic American brand name products that harken back to a time when fried cereal was appreciated as a culinary delight!

Phoenix is the author of several collectible coffee table books celebrating mid-century Southern California, Las Vegas, Hawaii road trips, and his native Pomona Valley.

1. What is your hometown?

Ontario, California.

2. With what fictional character do you most identify?

Probably Lucy Ricardo. Its her can-do, just-jump-in-approach to everyday life and also her ability to occasionally, when called for, rise above it all.

3. In the movie of your life, cast an actor to play you.

I have NO idea …

4. What work of art speaks to your soul?

The Unisphere, centerpiece, logo and crowning touch of the 1964 Worlds Fair.

5. What books are you currently reading or recommending?

I never read fiction. Actually don’t read a lot. I teach myself about what I’m interested in by looking at pictures or by my never ending coat to coast urban/suburban exploration. When I do read it always about pop culture. My favorite book is Holyland, by D.J. Waldie. I also REALLY enjoyed the reality check aspect of Fast Food Nation. And since you asked what I’m recommending … I’d guess I should say my books, like Southern California in the 50s and Americana the Beautiful.

6. What song or album is currently in heavy rotation on your iPod?

Carpenters Greatest Hits.

7. What’s the last movie that made you cry?

Can’t think of one. I don’t see many movies.

8. Cat person or dog person?

LOVE both … but really if I have to choose it would be cats cuz they are more independent.

9. What is more important, truth or kindness?

Truth for sure. Kindness is a gift.

10. How do you define sin?

Not doing unto others as you would have them do to you…

11. How do you define virtue?

Doing unto others as you would have them do unto you …

12. Design your headstone: What does it say? What does it look like?

He Lived and Loved to Celebrate Classic and Kitschy American Life and Style!!! Shape of the USA!!!
