Fort Frances

Fort Frances

After two years on the road – from recording in Maine to a long run of festival gigs – the three voices behind Fort Frances are coming home to Chicago with their new release, “The Harbour.” Inspired by a wintry Lake Michigan, and recorded downtown in the Windy City, this EP shows that Midwestern winters aren’t just for hibernating; the band approached writing and recording with a new energy fueled by the steady pace of the city.

From the opening pulse of “City by the Sea” to the jubilant stomp of “I Had Love”, “Harbour” is grounded in traffic jams and bus rides, towering skyscrapers and frozen sidewalks. It’s an ambitious collection of songs that you’ll want on repeat. Fort Frances’ winter labor will become your summer jam.

You can see Fort Frances live on May 23 at the Meyer Theatre in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

1. What is your hometown?

Chicago, IL

2. With what fictional character do you most identify?

Sal Paradise – “On the Road.”

3. In the movie of your life, cast an actor to play you.

Macaulay Caulkin. It would be called Home Alone 4.

4. What work of art speaks to your soul?

The entire Chicago skyline. While I love many cities for many different reasons, our downtown is the most unforgettable display of manmade brilliance.

5. What books are you currently reading or recommending?

I just finished “High Fidelity.” However, I’m more of a poetry guy. My top recommendation is James Wright’s “The Branch Will Not Break”, which is a brilliant display of Midwestern genius. I return to it time and again for lyrical help.

6. What song or album is currently in heavy rotation on your iPod?

Ryan Adams – “The Hardest Part.”

7. What’s the last movie that made you cry?

I can’t recall, but I’m known to cry at many of the moving pictures.

8. Cat person or dog person?

Dog person. To truly be considered a “companion animal”, the four-legged pal must be able to catch a frisbee.

9. What is more important, truth or kindness?

Truth trumps everything. (But bonus points should be awarded to all who have the ability to be both.)

10. How do you define sin?

A natural piece of the human equation.

11. How do you define virtue?

Something we all should constantly chase after.

12. Design your headstone: What does it say? What does it look like?

I’m afraid of that kind of stuff. How about a yearbook-esque signature: “stay cool, don’t change, let’s hang out this summer.”

Bonus Question: Who would you like to see answer these questions?

My regular barista at Starbucks.
