Avidya & The Kleshas

July 1, 2013

Stephanie Carlin of Avidya & The Kleshas

You will be reminded of many familiar things while listening to the powerful and multifarious vocal prowess of Stephanie Carlin, vocalist and composer for the four-piece folk-jazz fusion outfit Avidya and the Kleshas. Her impressive range coupled with an ability to express emotion through song will evoke comparisons to a long list of well-known female and male vocalists; just as sky-gazing will inevitably lend one to assimilate the beauty of clouds into known shapes and earthly objects. But paired with the intricately textured, genre-bending stylings of her talented backing band, the music transcends material confinement while simultaneously rooting the listener to certain core and universal truths; crashing waves, winged birds,  harmonic dissonance, love, lust, struggle, and glory.

Their debut album Tree of Series, made possible by a successful Kickstarter campaign, was released earlier this month.  The album’s single, “Body of Lead” will challenge the listener with unexpected but pleasant tempo changes, experimental noise accompaniment, and symphonic vocal harmonies that combine to create a dynamic crescendo of orchestral emotion.
