Space March

August 21, 2013
If you like your electropop melodic, layered and a little dreamy, then you’re going to love Space March! Space March is a creative project from Australian singer/songwriter/producer Craig Simmons, spanning more than 10 years.

Craig began Space March with the intention of finding new ground for 1980s style synthpop in the 21st century. Over the four Space March albums he has explored mixing synthpop with other genres, like indie, rock, Beatlesque psychedelia, dream pop, classical and film score music. In doing this, Space March has developed a signature sound which is different from his electro revival contemporaries.

Craig’s latest release, Mountain King is symphonic journey of retro-electro, classical and dream pop. He produced and mixed this fourth Space March album and it was mastered by German engineer, Robin Schmidt (OMD, Two Door Cinema Club). Sample a mix “You Are Electric,” the latest single from Mountain King, and read on.

1. What is your hometown?

Sydney, Australia – born and bred.

2. With what fictional character do you most identify?

Miles Monroe from Woody Allen’s film ‘Sleeper’ – a musician and owner of the ‘Happy Carrot’ health food store, who goes in for a minor operation and wakes up 200 years later in some crazy, upside-down world.

3. In the movie of your life, cast an actor to play you.

Jim Parsons (Dr. Sheldon Cooper). We share a number of physical traits and mannerisms.

4. What work of art speaks to your soul?

My own music and art – that’s why I make it!

5. What books are you currently reading or recommending?

Reading: Ann Sterzinger – ‘The Talkative Corpse’

Reading: David Byrne – ‘How Music Works’

Recommending: Stephen Hawking – ‘The Grand Design’

6. What song or album is currently in heavy rotation on your iPod?

Marnie – Crystal World. The first solo album from Helen Marnie – lead vocalist from Ladytron. It’s more pop than Ladytron and very beautiful – like Ladytron meets Goldfrapp, with, dare I say it, a touch of Space March.
Junip – (self titled). A Swedish three piece featuring Jose Gonzalez. Junip mix dreamy, psychedelic electronics with acoustic guitar and the gentle, emotive vocals of Jose Gonzalez. And best of all, the album features great songwriting.

7. What’s the last movie that made you cry?

I think the last one was the Alfred Hitchcock bio film from earlier this year.

8. Cat person or dog person?

9. What is more important, truth or kindness?

It depends on the outcome of being truthful or kind. What is needed – truth or kindness?

10. How do you define sin?

Sin is an invention of religion to assist in the control of social behaviours, especially prior to the development of laws by governments. It is completely meaningless in the broader context of nature and the universe. Things happen – whether they are good or bad comes down to our interpretation which is relative to our time and place.

11. How do you define virtue?

A potential girlfriend on the first and second date.

12. Design your headstone: What does it say? What does it look like?

Following the long tradition of posthumously exploiting an artist’s work, I’m sure it will say something like “BEST OF SPACE MARCH – OUT NOW! Free download with every rose.” Of course, my ability to negotiate a good royalty will be somewhat compromised.

Bonus Question: Who would you like to see answer these questions?

Sam Harris (philosopher & neuroscientist).

Ann  Sterzinger (dark comedic writer)
